Heritage Foundation Offers Luncheon Seminar on The VAT: Should America Adopt a French Tax System? Today in D.C.

The Heritage Foundation is offering a luncheon seminar on The VAT: Should America Adopt a French Tax System? today in Washington, D.C.:

The VAT is a consumption-base tax system collected at each stage of the production process. Common throughout the world, the VAT is sometimes praised by people on the left because it collects so much money and praised by people on the right because it is a relatively non-destructive way to finance government. That’s the good news. The bad news is that VATs make it easier to increase the size of government.

Should America follow the rest of the world and adopt a VAT? This seminar is part of an ongoing series of events designed to promote tax reform and provide some common- sense guidance as policymakers begin to explore how to create a better tax code.

Panelists:

For Mr. Mitchell’s views on the VAT, see What’s VAT? Enacting Such a Tax in America Would Be a Tragic Mistake (National Review, March 1, 2005)

The seminar is noon – 1:45 p.m. in Room 2261 of the Rayburn House Office Building, Independance Ave & S. Capitol Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20515.  Lunch is provided.  To RSVP, email Mimi Kelly here.
