We have faithfully mined the Miers nomination for tax nuggets (Miers and … Tax Textualism, … Tax Shelters, … Property Tax Exemption, … Charitable Deduction). Wonkette today includes this funny item:
The New York Times has posted a PDF of a portion of Harriet Miers’ correspondence while she was a Texas state official. Her giggly enthusiasm for the then-Governor Bush approaches parody…But most disturbing? Her reliance on greeting cards, including one for a belated birthday…On the inside it reads:
- This is the wish
- That should have been sent
- Before your birthday
- Came and went.
Hallmark will need to start a whole new line for her Supreme Court decisions:
- Penumbra be damned
- It just goes to show
- You can’t be a Christian
- And not overturn Roe
If Miers gets confirmed and is assigned a tax case, perhaps she can draw inspiration from Tax Case Limericks: A Casual Collection, 93 Tax Notes 865 (Nov. 5, 2001), with contributions from over a dozen Tax Profs. My favorite was penned by Christopher Hanna (SMU — Miers’ alma mater) on Commissioner v. Tufts, 461 U.S. 300 (1983):
- There once was a footnote in Crane
- At which the Court in Tufts took aim
- Tufts bought nonrecourse
- Bayles took in due course
- And Tufts realized the gain.
Update: Check out Wonkette’s possible explanation of this curious P.S. penned by President Bush in a card to Miers: "No more public scatology."
