Max Baucus, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, agreed to allow a confirmation vote on the nomination of Eric Solomon as the administration’s top tax official after a five-month block. Baucus refused to allow the committee to vote on the nomination because he wasn’t satisfied with the Treasury’s response to his request for a plan to collect what he says is about $300 billion in unpaid taxes each year. The finance committee today announced it would vote on Solomon’s nomination. Baucus’s spokeswoman, Carol Guthrie, didn’t immediately comment on why the senator, a Montana Democrat, changed his mind.
