Interesting article in the Chronicle of Higher Ed: Cashing In on Virtual Courses at Eastern Michigan U.: Professors Can Double Their Pay by Teaching Online, But Some of Their Leaders Find That Unfair, by Piper Fogg:
As a single mother raising three children, Daryl L. Barton has sometimes struggled to stay afloat. She has had a steady job as an associate professor of law at Eastern Michigan University for 30 years, but money was still a concern. Now Ms. Barton makes enough to own four houses, including one that is three minutes from the campus.
The professor is one of dozens of faculty members at Eastern Michigan who teach university courses online for extra cash. A lot of cash. Last year, for example, she pulled in an extra $70,000, almost as much as her $72,000 base salary….
Ms. Barton, who teaches business law, sports law, and women and the law, has taught online since 1999. Even though she has not taught face to face at all for three or four years, she says, she has not received … flak …. As a trained lawyer, she could make extra money practicing law on the side, which she used to do. But she gave that up to teach online. As for professors who are jealous, she says, there is nothing stopping them from teaching online.
