Kathryn Kennedy (John Marshall), Chair of the AALS Section on Employee Benefits, has issued a call for speakers at the January 2008 Annual Meeting on the proposed topic of IRAs: Planning Distribution Strategies and Plan Investments:
IRA assets represent over $3.7 trillion in U.S. retirement savings – a third of all U.S. household assets! The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides some new planning distribution strategies for IRA owners – qualified charitable distributions and non-spouse rollover options. In addition, the latest type of IRA being aggressively marketed is the self-directed real estate IRA. While they are legal, there are numerous landmines that may be unknown by unsuspecting owners. This program will provide an update on new planning strategies and investment possibilities for IRA owners. Speakers are needed on the following topics:
A. PPA ’06 Legislative Changes
- Non-spouse rollover option
- Qualified charitable distributions
- Roth IRA changes
B. Alternative Investments for IRAs
- Prohibited transactions and conflict of interest limitations
- UBTI issues
- “Sweat equity” and the distinction between investment and business
- Various types of real estate investments
