The IRS on Friday released the 2007 IRS Data Book (Publication 55B), which provides an annual snapshot of IRS activities for Oct. 1, 2006 – Sept. 30, 2007. The Data Book includes information about returns filed, tax collections, enforcement, taxpayer assistance, as well as the IRS budget and workforce:
During fiscal year 2007, the IRS collected almost $2.4 trillion in taxes (net of refunds) and processed more than 235 million returns. More than 114 million individual income tax return filers received tax refunds that totaled $248.6 billion. In fiscal year 2007, IRS spent an average of 40 cents to collect each $100 of tax revenue, which was the lowest in seven years and down from 42 cents per $100 in fiscal year 2006. IRS examined nearly 1.4 million individual income tax returns in fiscal year 2007. IRS personnel answered more than 33.2 million toll-free calls from taxpayers during the fiscal year, and the IRS Web site received about 215 million visits.
