Brian Leiter lists the ten law schools that take the most transfer students as a percentage of their first year class. Because 22.5% of the U.S. News rankings is based on the quality of the 1L class, decreasing the 1L class and making up for the foregone revenue by increasing the number of transfer students who do not count for U.S. News purposes is the most talked-about strategy for increasing a school’s ranking. (As Brian notes, there are other, more benign reasons for admitting large numbers of transfer students, such as bargain in-state tuition.) Five schools increase their student body by more than 15% of their 1L class.
