The Tax Foundation reports today that state tax revenues fell 8.9% in 2009 from 2008, with 45 states collecting less tax revenues. (In contrast, federal tax revenues fell 16.6% in 2009.) State revenues fell in four of the five taxes:
- Property Tax: +3.6%
- Selective Sales Tax: -2.7%
- General Sales Tax: -5.5%
- Individual Income Tax: -12.5
- Corporate Income Tax: -23.1%
Overall state tax revenues increased in only five states:
- South Dakota: 0.9%
- Iowa: 1.3%
- Oregon: 1.9%
- North Dakota: 4.3%
- Wyoming: 13.9%
The states with the biggest tax revenue declines were:
- Alaska: 51.9%
- Arizona: 19.7%
- South Carolina: 16.8%
- New Mixico: 15.1%
- California: 15.0%
- Idaho: 14.1%
- Virginia: 12.8%
- Connecticut: 12.1%
- New Jersey: 11.9%
- Utah: 11.9%
- Georgia: 11.7%
- Massacusetts: 11.7%
- Florida: 11.5%
- North Carolina: 10.6%
- Colorado: 10.3%
- Tennessee: 10.0%
