National Jurist: The Financial Struggles of Public Law Schools

The nation’s economic recession has found one more victim — the state-funded law school.

As state governments struggle, many have slashed their high-education allocations. As a result, some public law schools are looking at significant shortfalls — and they are reacting with dramatic speed.

At Arizona State, … Dean Paul Schiif Berman has suggested a five-year plan where tuition will rise between 5-10% and student enrollment will increase from about 195 to 225 per class. …

University of Minnesota Law School Dean David Wippman told students to prepare for a 13.5% increase in tuition to balance the budget. According to reports, state funding for Minnesota law school fell from 22% to 11% over the past two years. …

Arizona State is among a select few law schools at public universities that have trimmed their financial ties to state funding. Others include Michigan and Virginia.
