The late Amy Winehouse was many things to many folks — fabulous talent, an inspiration to Lady Gaga, an addict who couldn’t quite shed her demons all come to mind. Add to that list: wise estate planner.

Winehouse’s revised will reportedly prevents any of her fortune, estimated at $16 million and most assuredly growing, from going to her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, widely regarded as the person who introduced her to hard drugs. Instead, her millions will be divided among her father, Mitch; mother, Janis; and older brother, Alex. … Fielder-Civil, now serving a sentence for burglary and possession of an imitation firearm, might have inherited everything had Winehouse not put a new will in place.

ABA Journal, Lawyer Forgot to Change IRA Beneficiary, So the Money Went to His Ex-Wife, Not His Widow:

After a bitter divorce, Newman Trowbridge Jr. presumably didn’t intend to retain his ex-wife as his beneficiary on his [$184,000] IRA.

But when he died unexpectedly in 2009, the beneficiary still hadn’t been changed. And it didn’t help his widow’s case, when she sued in an effort to collect on the IRA, that Trowbridge was a sophisticated attorney who routinely oversaw his own estate-planning decisions, according to Penton Business Media post on Insurance News Net.

Although no one seemed to think his ex was the intended beneficiary, she got the money anyway after a FINRA arbitration.
