Discussions of a merger between the law schools at the University of Akron and Cleveland State University are officially over.

Crain’s Cleveland Business reports that members of an exploratory committee said the talks “fizzled” almost a year ago.

The schools announced in August 2020 that they would explore a merger amid a decline in law school enrollment.

In a joint statement Thursday, the universities said the working group examining the possibility of a law school merger was nixing the idea based on feedback.

"Many alumni, students, faculty and others shared with us their strong feelings of pride in both law schools' identity and tradition," the statement read. "While there was widespread support for the idea of innovative programs and collaborations, many expressed concerns about the idea of a combination of the two law schools."
