Law.com, Judge Judy's NYLS Scholars Program Under Investigation by OCR for Alleged Title IX Violation:
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is investigating New York Law School to determine whether Judge Judy Sheindlin’s scholars program violates Title IX.
In January, Sheindlin gave a $5 million legacy gift to NYLS to establish the Judge Judy Sheindlin Honors Scholars Program, open to women who primarily have financial need and who have the credentials to merit the scholarship. …
Mark Perry, professor emeritus of economics at the Flint campus of the University of Michigan, contacted the OCR to allege that the scholars program is “illegal,” since it is only for women, according to his Twitter page. …
Reached late Monday, Sheindlin responded to Law.com’s request for comment with some choice words for Perry. … “Professor Perry’s assault on scholarships for 10 academically gifted women who can’t afford law school is petty. He says he has filed 700 such actions. He has too much time on his hands.”
Who qualifies for the Judge Judy Sheindlin ’65 Honors Scholars Program? Women with excellent credentials and demonstrated financial need will be considered for the program. The Judge Judy Sheindlin ’65 Honors Scholars Program will select three to four women per entering class for renewable full scholarships. Once fully implemented, there will be ten women at NYLS receiving the Judge Judy Sheindlin ’65 full-tuition scholarship each academic year.
ABA Journal, Law School Is Investigated for Judge Judy's Female-Only Scholarship Program:
Perry told the College Fix in an email that New York Law School should have known better. “It’s really surprising that neither Judge Judy nor a law school filled with lawyers and a Title IX coordinator either didn’t realize or weren’t concerned that sex-based discrimination is illegal according to Title IX,” Perry said.
He said he thinks that the school could fix the Title IX violation by ending female-only scholarships by opening the scholarship program to everyone or by creating an equivalent male-only scholarship program.
