Law360, Seton Hall President Leaving After Law School Theft Scandal:
Seven months after a $1 million embezzlement scandal rocked Seton Hall University School of Law, university President Joseph Nyre made the surprise announcement Monday that he would be stepping down from the role he has held since 2019, cutting short his initial five-year term at the helm of the New Jersey Catholic university.
In a letter shared with the university community, Nyre said he believed now was an "appropriate time" for new leadership at the university following the end of a fundraising drive and announced plans for a one-year sabbatical followed by his official resignation, but made no mention of embezzlement perpetrated by staff at the law school, news of which first broke in December.
Nyre's departure comes on the heels of the departure of the law school's dean, Kathleen Boozang, who announced her resignation as dean in November, weeks before the university first broke the news that staff had misappropriated $975,000 in law school funds.
Boozang officially stepped down Jan. 1, with plans to return in the summer as a faculty member.
