The number of active lawyers in the United States has hit a 10-year high and has increased this year for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the ABA’s latest Profile of the Legal Profession, which was released Monday, there are 1.37 million U.S. lawyers in 2025, up from 1.35 million in 2024. The report, which is based on findings from the 2025 National Lawyer Population Survey, shows that 2025 marks the first increase in overall lawyer head count in this country since 2020.
