Above the Law and others (here and here) have been priming the pump for controversy over the upcoming U.S. News law school rankings. Professor Derek Muller has released his updated projections for the 2026-2027 U.S. News law school rankings, which also has stirred the rankings pot. Our own Paul Caron had his own projections last May and, more recently, posted on this blog about the Professor Muller’s projections and Yale’s projected ranking.
Nobody knows for sure but the retirement of U.S. News rankings guru Robert Morse may bring some methodological changes to the rankings. Might the changes be significant ones and shake the top 20 up a bit (or a lot)? Hard to tell. But, as occurs year after year, it is fair to expect a re-arranging of the rankings, responses, and criticism.
Stay tuned as law school deans, faculty, students, alums, staff, and others no doubt will respond to the law school equivalent of March Madness before and after the release of the latest U.S. News law school rankings. As I have blogged about several times (see, e.g., here and here), there are many different law school rankings. But U.S. News undoubtedly gets the most attention.
As a recovering dean, I will not miss the U.S. News scramble.
