A recent piece in Law.com about the surge in law school applications last year (continuing this year).

The number of law school applicants in 2025 increased by 18% compared to the previous year to reach 76,500, reflecting the single greatest year-over-year increase in applicants since 2004, as interest in the legal field continues to boom, according to AccessLex Institute’s latest Legal Education Data Deck.

With the increase in the number of applicants, the law school admission rate fell in 2025 by four percentage points, reaching 65%—the lowest rate observed in any application cycle since 2006. The rate had previously hovered around 69% for a period of five years.

Prospective law students are facing even stiffer competition at top-tier law schools like Yale, Stanford, Penn Carey and others that have reported a decrease in acceptance rates.
