I suppose we should all be reading what the NYTimes is featuring about many members of our profession. Our author, Matthew Wollin appears not to have paid attention at NYU Law School, which has one of the top legal writing programs in the nation. I’m sure his teachers explained quite carefully that the presentation of facts in a brief is always a more important part of persuasion than the legal argument. I prefer to celebrate the firms that stood up to the White House and the great pro bono work so many have done. Of course, we devote more legal energy than we should to helping rich people get richer. But so many great leaders have begun their careers in large law firms. And if not for WilmerHale, would this author have a platform in the NYT. I tell my students struggling with high student debt that firm foundations make for bold aspirations.
