In Gerontocracy in America, Samuel Moyn, Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale, brings us a timely and insightful analysis of how older Americans have gathered and retained wealth and power at the potential expense of creating opportunities for succeeding generations. Consider the most mundane example of senior discounts offered at so many services, including public ones. In my town, residents over 65 park free in public lots. Such discounts are essential to retirees on fixed incomes struggling to make ends meet. But so many of us are still working that perhaps a fairer approach could be found. Of course, Professor Moyn is more interested in older folks holding on to reins of power in government, business, and academia. His views are controversial, but certainly worth confronting.
