Santhie Goundar, “Advisers Ponder Tax Issues Around Prince Harry’s Return to U.K.” (Tax Notes, Aug. 24, 2026):
The news that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are returning to the United Kingdom from the United States sparked discussion among tax advisers about the timing of the move.
. . . .
Discussion and interest was sparked among the profession after one tax practitioner observed on the social platform X that the timing of Harry and California-born Meghan’s move back meant that they had been non-U.K.-resident for six full tax years and fell outside the “temporary non-resident” rules for capital gains tax.
However, Dan Neidle of Tax Policy Associates commented in an August 20 post on X that Harry and Meghan returning after six tax years had passed was “something that could easily be a coincidence. Or not.” It is unknown whether tax was a consideration in the couple’s decision.
