Gerald Prante & Mark Robyn have published New Census Data on Property Taxes on Homeowners (Fiscal Fact No. 157) (Dec. 2008) on the Tax Foundation website. They have assembled a ranking of the 1,817 U.S. counties with populations greater than 20,000 based on:
- Median real estate taxes paid
- Median real estate taxes paid as a percentage of median home value
- Median real estate taxes paid as a percentage of median household income
Here are the Top 10 and Bottom 10 counties in each of these categories — counties in New York (18) and New Jersey (12) claim all of the Top 10 spots on the three lists, and parishes in Louisiana claim twenty-nine of the thirty Bottom 10 spots:
