LSU Names New Dean Who Failed to Receive Majority Faculty Support

From the Associated Press:

First-amendment attorney Jack Weiss [Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, New York] has been named the next chancellor of LSU’s law center. The LSU Board of Supervisors made the pick unanimously Friday. Weiss will succeed John Costonis at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. Costonis is retiring.

The board picked Weiss over Eric Chiappinelli, an associate dean at Seattle University School of Law, and Michael Krauss, a professor at George Mason University School of Law in Virginia. LSU law faculty had offered majority support for Chiappinelli and Krauss; Weiss neither received majority support nor majority opposition.

Update:  Because "Weiss neither received majority support nor majority opposition," the appointment is not inconsistent with Interpretation 206-1:  "Except in circumstances demonstrating good cause, a dean should not be appointed or reppaointed to a new term over the stated objection of a substantial majority of the faculty."
