Tax Filing Extensions Available Via Internet, Telephone, or Mail

Taxpayers can get an automatic four-month extension for filing their tax returns due today via:

The Internet: e-file an extension request using tax preparation software. You will get an acknowledgment that the IRS has received the request.
Telephone: Call this toll-free number: 1-888-796-1074. You will get a confirmation number signifying that the extension request has been accepted.
Mail: File Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

The automatic extension just applies to the filing of the return; taxpayers still must pay any tax due by today (or face penalties and interest charges for late payment).

Paul Caron was named Duane and Kelly Roberts Dean of Pepperdine University School of Law on June 1, 2017.
