President’s Tax Reform Panel Seeks Public Comments on Four Issues

Tax_reform_panelThePresident’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform has announced that it is seeking public comments on these four issues:

  1. Headaches, unnecessary complexity, and burdens that taxpayers — both individuals and businesses — face because of the existing system
  2. Aspects of the tax system that are unfair
  3. Specific examples of how the tax code distorts important business or personal decisions
  4. Goals that the Panel should try to achieve as it evaluates the existing tax system and recommends options for reform

At this point, the Panel is not asking for specific proposals.

Information on how to submit comments as well as details on the required format for comments are available here. Comments submitted in connection with this first request must be received by the Panel no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 18. All comments submitted will be made available to the public.

The second meeting of the Panel is scheduled for March 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Jack Morton Auditorium, Media and Public Affairs Building, The George Washington University, 805 21st Street, NW., Washington, DC 20052:

Please Reform the Alternative Minimum Tax so that it does not hit middle income folks. It was or iginally designed to prevent multimillionaires from using loopholes topay their fair share of taxes. Because it is not adjusted for inflation and because it defeats the Bush tax cut, because it especially hits middle income taxpayers with children (94%) it is becoming increasingly unfair to middle and low taxpayers.
By 2014, without reform an additional 40 million taxpayers will owe alternative minimum tax while wealthy investors with superlow capital gains and dividend taxeswill avoid paying tens of billions of taxes each year on the backs of lower income folks. This amounts to a huge taxshelter to the well off and a tax increase for others who labor at the country’s work.
    Sincerely,
    John & Marie Glascock
