Legal Education And The Rule Of Law

James Huffman (Lewis & Clark), Legal Education and the Rule of Law, 60 Cal. W. L. Rev. 571 (2024):

There are many explanations for the current state of affairs in the American legal system. But surely, what goes on in our law schools is an important factor. For decades American youth have learned little about government, the Constitution, or the legal system—what was once called civics. Now, most lawyers learn about these important topics for the first time in law school. With the proliferation of esoteric courses, skills training in the context of activist agendas, faculties of little philosophical diversity, and schools with activist missions, it is not surprising that students graduate with little appreciation for the rule of law. American society as a whole would benefit significantly from a renewed commitment to, and understanding of, the rule of law in American law schools.
