London-based Times Higher Education on Thursday released its seventh annual World University Rankings, based on this methodology of 13 variables in five categories:
- Teaching: 30%
- Research Influence (citations): 32.5%
- Research (volume, income, and reputation): 30%
- Internationalization (student and staff ratios): 5%
- Knowledge Transfer and Innovation (industry income): 2.5%

As the Chronicle of Higher Education reports, there are major developments in the university rankings game. For the prior six years, Times Higher Education ("THE") produced its World University Rankings in collaboration with Quacquarelli Symonds Limited ("QS"). By all accounts, the World University Rankings were the most influential university rankings in the worlds. THE now partners with Thomson Reuters in producing the World University Rankings. QS now produces the QS World University Rankings in partnership with U.S. News & World Report; the 2010 QS World University Rankings will be released (and blogged here) next week.
