The ABA Tax Section is looking to hire a Pro Bono Staff Counsel to work in the Washington, D.C. staff office:
The Tax Section’s Pro Bono Staff Counsel works with the Section’s Pro Bono Committee to coordinate efforts to provide service to the pro bono tax assistance community and individual taxpayers. As such, he/she assists in providing technical tax assistance, guidance and support to persons and organizations throughout the United States that are engaged in the development, promotion and delivery of pro bono legal services in the tax area.
The Pro Bono Staff Counsel oversees and manages committee projects, including the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) projects, and manages the substantive legal aspects of the work. He/she assists in developing training and educational opportunities, drafts reports, writes for publications and makes presentations in the area of tax pro bono work. In addition, he/she oversees research, report-writing, and publishing of Committee products, coordinates or supports member sub-groups, and coordinates with external constituencies. This position interacts regularly with staff of the IRS, Treasury, VITA and LITC assistance centers, as well as trainers at clinics, community foundations, and Section membership as needed.
As the principal Section expert on pro bono law and public policy, the Pro Bono Staff Counsel will provide technical assistance in analyzing laws, regulations, court rules and policies/policy proposals, and will prepare memoranda on law or public policy as needed. He/she will develop long term pro bono strategies for the Section.
