UGA Law Prof. Larry E. Blount personified what a law professor should be – scholarly, challenging, engaging, yet personable and compassionate. We admired and respected him greatly!
My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Sandra Blount and her children.
I met Prof. Larry Blount during the summer of 1976 at Ole Miss’ CLEO Institute. He was an inspirational professor and mentor. I diverted from pursuing law to preparing for the ministry and serving as a U. S. Navy chaplain for the past 27 years but my summer under Prof. Blount’s tutelage served me well.
He was a scholar, gentleman, and a great community advocate. He will be sorely missed.
I just came across this blog with mention of Professor Blount while looking up his wife, Sandra. I could not miss the opportunity to say that Larry Blount was a giant of a man in spirit. He helped me, a single divorced mom raising her elementary school age daughter and teenage sister, while working my way through the University of Georgia.
He won a law case (pro bono) that was helpful to my family as we dealt with an inheritance injustice. Professor Blount was among the investors and board members, of WXAG, the first Black Radio Station in Athens. His vision gave me an opportunity to be an announcer and also news director at the station. I went on to garner more than 20 years media experience and three Associated Press Awards. Larry Blount came to mind on 12/7/08 as I was covering the Niner vs. Jets as a field photographer for LaHitz Media. After 20 years, I ran into the NY Daily News Columnist, Tim Smith, who was the first news director of WXAG. We were part of the inaugural staff.
God bless Professor Blount, his family and the lives of those he touched. The first Black professor at UGA Law School, was in a lofty position, but he was open-hearted enough to help a struggling student. He took time to hear my pleas and took on my cause. He shares in any of my successes! I thought I’d have a chance to thank him again in person.
Take the time to show your appreciation now because tomorrow is not promised. With all due respect, I love you,Professor Blount. Thank you Attorney Caron for allowing me to express my sadness at the loss of a great man.
