Dan Rostenkowski, Chair of the House Ways & Means Committee during the Tax Reform Act of 1986, died today at the age of 82. From Dan Shaviro (NYU):
I was on the Joint Committee of Taxation staff for the 1986 Tax Reform Act, during Rosty's tenure. Whatever else one says about him at any other point in his career, at that time I observed him to be a true statesman and leader. (And I speak as one who is extremely hard to please, when it comes to political figures.)

Dan Rostenkowski was a decent man who never quite made the transition from Chicago to Washington. He played a very positive role in the 1986 tax reform which constitutes his legacy. Certainly the Congress was a much more pleasant place when people like him were still there.
To some degree echoing Professor Shaviro’s comments, while listening to Dan Rostenkowski on C-SPAN radio yesterday, as the former Chairman described how minority leader Bob Michel would visit Speaker O’Neill’s office once each week, while minority leader Gephardt would visit Speaker Gingrich’s office once every six months, I am indeed sorry to learn of the death of a gentleman who knew how to walk across the aisle.
